Nigredo

The work uses ad hoc biophysical methods and wearable bioacoustic technology to stimulate a continuous sensorial feedback within the visitor’s own body. In a small, blacked out room a visitor sits alone facing a mirror, and wired to on-body sensors. The low frequency sound pulses produced by the visitor’s heart, muscular and vascular tissues are captured, augmented and fed back into the subject’s sensory system as new auditive, visual, and physical stimuli. Intense surround sound, pulsating lights, and mechanical vibrations are diffused through the subject’s ears, eyes, bones, and skull. The combined skeletal resonance, sound stimuli, and light pulses produce a constant and intense stimulation field that alters the movement of the internal organs, and the behaviour of the optical nerves. The perception of one own’s visual image and physical body mutates. It is an experience taking place between viscera and perception.

In analytical psychology the Nigredo is a metaphor of the moment of despair and disillusionment caused by an ever deepening descent into the dark unknowns of the subconscious mind. The Nigredo represents the key to the psychological process of integrating the conscious with the unconscious.

Nigredo: Private experience of altered self-perception and biophysical media (Xth Sense) // Marco Donnarumma
Live recordings from a preview of the work at STEIM (NL), February 2013.

Developed during a residency at STEIM, Nigredo is a private 8 minute artwork to be experienced by one visitor at a time. The work explores how perceptual deprivation affects alterity, or otherness, that is the aware distinction between self and not-self.

Citadels: Common Structures

As a window to a virtual world, Lightscape visualises an abstract universe composed only of light and sound, exploring the borders of our sensory hardware. While the eye tries to make sense of the sensory overload, a dazzling display of highly detailed patterns and colour combinations is formed in the retina and fed to the brain: the curious phenomena you see are created by the eye itself, induced by the flickering lights. The effect is impossible to capture on video or in text; it can only be experienced in real life.

STEIM workshops: Geluid van Nederland

STEIM, in partnership with the Geluid van Nederland project, presents a series of workshops addressing the creation, consumption, and reappropriation of sound material through the practice of field recording.
steim.org/2012/10/steim-geluid-van-nederland-workshop-series-registration-open/

The Geluid van Nederland project is a collaborative effort between Kennisland, De Auditieve Dienst and the Nederlands Instituut voor Beeld en Geluid to crowdsource a massive online archive of field recordings. The archive will be sustainably preserved and available for free use by artists.

The Geluid van Nederland website contains an archive of geocoded field recordings already collected as part of the Geluid van Nederland project. We encourage participants to add their own recordings from the workshop to this archive, and also to use recordings from the archive as part of their projects. The entire Geluid van Nederland archive is open for free creative use and will remain sustainably preserved as it grows. The audiotours and source recordings are shared on soudcloud in the ‘Het Geluid van Nederland’-archive and sustainably preserved. soundcloud.com/groups/het-geluid-van-nederland

OOZE performance trailer

OOZE // interdisciplinary dance performance

Shaping the perception of the spectator, sculpting time, drawing the attention towards the body itself, its flesh, zooming into the skin. A body of sensations – filled with and moved by textures having an urgent desire to operate. Constantly becoming, caught in the process of morphing, free to leave or revive its original shape. How would you move without organs? Lets mould this corporal material and neglect its entity.

CONCEPT / CHOREOGRAPHY // Mirjam Sögner
VISUALS / LIVE VIDEO MIXING / EDIT // Tanja Busking
DANCE // Inge van Huijkelom, Fariza Achoendova, Peter Cripps Clark
MUSIC // Arvid Jense
CAMERA // Julian Jeandor, Pieter Lightfoot, Gerard van Leeuwen

The performance shows dance combined with live video mixing and projections of merged bodies on a 12x7m transparant scrim. Movement took place in front and behind the scrim. Because of this transparency of the scrim, the bodies morphed as layers on top of each other. This video shows a short summary of the whole 30min performance.

Special thanks to Julian Jeandor, Pieter Lightfoot, Gerard van Leeuwen, Royal Conservatoire The Hague and Maistro Jarno Burger

BioDome

BioDome is an installation developed by Beer van Geer, Jarno Burger & Dennis de Bruijn. This installation is a dome structure the size of 5x5m with live visuals and sounds generated by the user. With a mirrorball and homemade projection techniques the hole dome is illuminated 360degrees.

Users have the opportunity to enter the dome to interact with images and sound by the use of biofeedback. The visuals and auditory feedback will respond to a range of pulse patterns generated by the user. Different heartrate patterns reflect different states and generate a dynamic atmosphere through color, animation patterns, musical melodies and rhythms.

The user will gain insight into internal processes and can feel and control through simple breathing techniques. The breathing techniques will be illustrated in the installation and within a few minutes to learn. The Biodome not only provides an innovative way of interaction, but drills out a totally new perception area where the inner world of man is visible.

Dutch Stamps

4-PART PUBLICATION- Serie of booklets on stamp design though the years, including my own design for a fictitious stamp, and exclusive photo- graphs of the design sketches, made in the archive of the Museum of Communication.

The concept on the layout design is based on the grid that has been used in the stamp itself. This also reoccures on the covers: when putting all four covers next to each other, it forms a interwoven pattern, of all different grids into one whole.

Expanded Performance

For a period of three months (September 30 – December 16, 2012) the program of Stroom Den Haag (center for art and architecture in The Hague, The Netherlands) is dedicated to performance art, in the broadest sense of the word. We will explore the practice of ‘expanded’ performance, breaking through the boundaries of the exhibition space and actively engaging the audience.
